Underwater photography
 

Hi,

Can anyone give me some information on underwater cameras for the Galapagos? My husband and I are planning to go in February with Lindblad Expeditions.

We have a 35mm with zoom lenses and I was told by someone that you could get a waterproof case for it so you could used it in the water. Does this sound right? I have never taken underwater pictures before and need to know what is the best cameras, etc...

Yes, you can buy underwater cases for cameras - you'd just have to find one that would hold your camera. I'd try a good camera store or go to www.google.com and search for "underwater camera cases". You'll get lots of web-sites to research on.

BTW, the cases cost anywhere from $100 to $300 or more.

I was in the Galapagos in May. I spent $100.00 before I left on a waterproof camera, waste of money! It was waterlogged the first snorkel, so I threw it away. I bought a couple of Kodak disposables on the boat, and they worked great as usual. I didn't want to spend a lot on a waterproof, as I also brought my 35mm and a video camera. Bring tons of film! Have fun!

You can get underwater cases for your camera, I have one for my dimage x digital camera. Keep in mind though that at any given time the case could leak and ruin your existing camera, so if that is your only one, I would recommend a water camera or a throw away. I also have a Canon sure-shot water camera which I took on vacation last year and will be taking to the Galapagos at the end of September. Since my Dimage X is the only other camera I have, I do not want to risk losing all of my pictures due to a o-ring failure on its case.

We have a Sony DSC-P5 Cyber-shot 3.2 mega pixel digitel camera with underwater housing. We've had it for over two years. It takes great underwater (snorkeling and diving) and top-side photos. The whole outfit cost about $500 on the Internet and is probably cheaper by now. We've never had a problem with leaks. I really like this camera for several reasons - one being that you can zoom on the spot with it and also zoom after the fact - once the photos are loaded into your computer. Its also great to be able to color correct the underwater photos once we get home - getting rid of the blue and enhancing the reds. But the most fun is projecting the images right onto our condo tv set at the end of each day and sharing with friends while we're still on vacation.
