typhoid shots for peru

Is it necessary to get a typhoid shot for visiting lima, cusco, the sacred valley and machu pichu? Is there a difference between the oral vaccine and getting a shot? Thanks in advance.

It is always best to call the travel hotline thru your health care provider as they can differ. I just happened to call mine today and was told that yes it is necessary and that the shot lasts for 2 years and that the pills, which you take 4 at two day intervals last 5. So that is what we are doing for our Peru trip.

We too were told by our travel physician that the typhoid vaccine is necessary. We just finished the oral medication a few days ago and had no problems. Only challenge is you cannot take any antibiotics at the same time (and should be careful with alcohol). The vaccine consists of four pills to be taken every other day, and unfortunately I was battling a cold at the same time and was limited with what I could take.

We visited those areas last May and needed no vaccinations.

Yes, it is not only necessary but it is wise. I took the pills as I hate shots.

Enjoy!

About 5 years ago, my brother in law came back from Peru with typhoid, and spent a week in GW Hospital.

Just an FYI.
