Two weeks in South America
 

My husband and I are having such a hard time deciding where we will be traveling during our two week vacation in May. Is there anyone who can tell us what "not to miss?" Can you suggest what country we should start in? Thank you for your help

That's not very specific.

You should stick with one-two countries in two weeks.

If you're a beginner traveler in the developing world, try Argentina. It's pretty user-friendly, and is amazing culture-wise. Do Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Salta -- fly to save time.

If you're more adventurous, try the Cusco, Peru to La Paz, Bolivia circuit. Hit Cusco, Machu Picchu, both sides of Lake Titicaca, and La Paz.

La Paz - Cusco is probably 12-14 hours. You buy one ticket, but take a series of buses. The bus stops at the straits of tiquina (I think that's it) for the bus to travel on a giant canoe across. The bus stops again in Copacabana, and then again in Puno, Juliaca, and finally Cusco. It's a long trip. You could fly from La Paz back to Lima (if your flight is from there) to make it more sane.

It's also a good idea to allot extra time in case there is a transit strike.

Barbara, I think Argentina would give you plenty to do for two weeks. If you wanted to hit Iguazu, you could cross to the Brazilian side for a day.

Another option is to do BA and Rio, using those two cities as bases for day trips, but I've never done that.

But don't forget, Bolivia and Brazil both require a $100+ visa for entry.

is it possible to fly cusco to la paz? is the bus journey very nice and beautiful?
