Tulum Questions: Snorkeling, Paddleboards, Private driver
Hello Travelers,
Heading to Tulum next month and want to plan some activities. Looking for a private driver, list of favorite places to paddle board & snorkel plus off the beaten path cenotes to visit. Many Thanks! |
Since no one else has responded....
I don't hear much about snorkeling in Tulum. You might look further north, perhaps at Akumal and Puerto Morelos. You might want to check into options for a visit to Si'an Kaan. IME, the Moon Guide provides excellent coverage of your options in the area. |
No snorkeling or paddleboarding on the Tulum coast - lots of waves. You can look at Soloman Bay, Tankah Bay, Akumal, Puerto Morelos for these activities. There are so many cenotes to choose from.
Driving this area is very easy, you might want to consider renting a car for a day or two. |
Ditto the others, you can also try Half Moon Bay but you will want water shoes there and also for Tankah. Also Yal-Ku Lagoon at the north end of HMB.
|
Snorkeling in Akumal? Not so much. That entire coast might hold some interest for beginners but even then...would not think of the sea edging that area as a snorkel paradise. Maybe off Cozumel, but even then...
Lots of man-made destruction...... |
I would also strongly recommend snorkeling in the Akumal area, calm areas with nice beaches. You can even rent equipment in Akumal bay so as to actively swim in the bay and actively swim with turtles and many other creatures in their own habitat... this area is not fenced off, it is open to the sea and very much worthwhile. If you rent, you will need to provide them with some kind of proof, such as passport or copy, drivers license and the like. |
We have used this driving service twice now on trips to the Yucatan. It isn't super cheap but has been extremely good and reliable. It is especially worthwhile on the longer distance like the airport to Tulum. From Tulum to Akumal it is just as easy to take a taxi or even the bus if you don't mind a bit of a walk out to the highway area from the beaches.
