Trip Report - Argentina/Chile

We just returned last week, all I can say is what AMAZING countries. This was our best trip ever. Started in BA for one night at the Marriott Park Plaza. The hotel is fine, location great. The personel are wonderful and helpful. Our room was spacious, sunny and updated. I had no complaints. From there, up to Iguazu Falls for 2 night, stayed at the Sheraton, yes, this is the place to stay. I found the hotel just fine, it's clean, the room was spacious, and oh, that balcony overlooking the falls! We ate at the Sheraton one night, it was fine, the second night we took another Foderite's suggestion and went to the Casino, where we had an excellent meal and did a little gambling.
We then flew to Ushuaia (long day), stayed at the Hosteria del Fuego outside of town. Again, very accomodating, wonderful place (small, 10 rooms). Had two full day tours by Canal Fun (great tour group), one in 4x4s to Lake Fagano, the next day, a walk through Gable Island then a boat to see the Penguins. Again, wonderful. Had a great dinner at Chez Manu and one at a restaurant down the street from the hotel on the water (sorry, can't remember the name).

Now, onto Chile, took a teeny, tiny flight from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas. Were met by Angelo from Chile Nativo who took us to see the Penguins at Seno Otway, then onto Puerto Natalas. Picked us up the next day and drove 3 hours into the Torres del Paine where we took a boat ride on Lago Grey to see the glaciers. Again, magnificent. Long day, but worth every minute. The scenery is awesome. Stayed at the Aqua Terra Lodge in Puerta Natalas, small and adequate. If you like avocados, you'll be in heaven, it seems to be the Chilean specialty in these parts. Had it stuffed with King Crab (cold), it was great.
The next day we were driven back to Punta Arenas by Angelo (3 hours) and flew to Puerto Montt. Stayed there, but should have stayed in Puerto Vargas. Only one night, as we were doing the Lake crossing into Bariloche. Again, a long day (left at 8:00 am, arrived Bariloche at 9:00 pm), but the scenery is spectacular. Crossing the Andes is amazing. Here is where we treated ourselves to the Llao Llao Resort and yes, it is worth every penny. Had a fantastic hot stone massage ($40), the food, the ambiance, entertainment ever night. Felt like the lifestyles of the rich and famous. I did not want to leave. Back to BA for the last two nights, shopping, shopping shopping. We are hooked on South America, the people, the country everything is wonderful (and we used to be Europhiles). A big thank you to Mercedes at Argentina Escapes who made all the perfect arrangements for us. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

Sounds like a wonderful trip! I've done your trip in 2 parts - 5/03 Santiago to Puerto Montt driving across to Bariloche then to BA and then 12/04 Cruise from Santiago to Ushuaia (another stop in Puerto Montt) and flew to Iguazu from there. All great places.
I completely agree with the Sheraton Iguazu being worth the money and even more so Llao Llao! I had the thermal mud massage ($30-ish)- ahhh...
Chez Manu is a must and don't forget the hearts of palm in Chile. So much better than the canned stuff we get here!
Great trip report!
