Travelling to Mexico City with the family
Hi there,
My family (wife plus three kids) and I will be going to a business trip to Mexico City for like 4-5 days, probably around July, and the wife was planning on mainly visiting the various museums in the area, like the National Watercolour's Museum, the León Trotsky House museum, and the Frida Kahlo Museum with the kids.
I've booked in advance the hotel, since it's kind of hard to find whole suites for this price (500usd for a week).
If any of you happen to know about a cheaper or better alternative, I would be grateful, though have in mind that we are looking for a more local experience, not so much as the average international hotel.
Also, I'm kinda worried about the security in the area, since she will be all alone with the kids, so any insights or previous experiences will be of great help.

Have you considered an Airbnb house or apartment? I haven't been to Mexico City but have booked Airbnb accommodations for visits in other Mexican cities. Check the website and see what's available. Other members here can guide you on the neighborhood issue once you have some possibilities.

Airbnb might work for you...I have seen some very nice places advertised in Condesa
..being a woman traveling alone, I decided on hotels.
If you are looking for “local experience”, brush up on your Spanish..I found it very useful.
Taxi drivers generally don’t speak English or know the location of a museum or restaurant.
One has to give them the street name or the intersection. Often, they don’t have GPS.

We visited Mexico City for the first time in November and were very pleasantly impressed both by the city itself and how safe we found it in comparison with many other cities we have visited.

In particular although we used the public transport extensively, I would suggest using Uber as we found it cheap, efficient and safe. You need a Mexican SIM card and if you both download the app you will be both able to use the same account and you will be able to keep track your families whereabouts.
Do book Frida Kahlos house online in plenty of time. We turned away te first time as te waiting time was about 4 hours!

Our kids loved Mexico City!
We stayed in Condesa in an AirBnB and really liked that neighborhood and Roma quite a bit. (I wrote a travelogue about the entire visit: https://hitherandthither.net/travelogue-mexico-city/)
We used Uber as our transportation most of the time and felt a bit more secure than taxis—but we felt very safe throughout our visit.
