Traveling with expired passport

I have read that Mexico will accept an expired U.S. passport up to five years past expiration. I know Canada does this, and the Bahamas, too, I think. Have any of you ever tried this? Did you have any problems?
Ken

Ken instead of asking this question you should get your act together and just get a new passport. Sooner or later you will need one anyway. Depends where you traveling in Mexico but sometimes the officials there are looking for anything to get their fee(read: bribe). It is very easy procedure to get a new passport

You don't need a passport to get into Canada as a US citizen and I don't think you need one to go to Mexico either. However, the previous response is correct - just get a new passport! I look at it this way - who knows when I'll get some fabulous opportunity to travel to a place where I do need my Canadian passport - and I'd be kicking myself if I didn't one.

Ken it is not worth the risk. My passport was up to date just a bit beaten up while I was riding through on my motor bike and they wanted to claim it was a fake...be careful! Mexico is one of my favorite places, but it can also be a very corrupt place and if someone thinks they can pull something over on you...they will. It's not worth the risk. You can get a new Passport in one day for a small fee.

Okay, folks, you convinced me. I'm headed out today to the passport office.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Mexico also accepts birth certificates but you must have picture ID to go along with it. I just got back a few weeks ago and had no problems. If you're from the US, everyone says it must have a "raised seal" As I'm Canadian I'm not sure what they mean. My wife, born in Quebec doesn't have a birth certificate but was able to get in with her baptismal certificate (legal here in Canada) No "fees" were required!
