Where in Guanacaste are you staying? That will help us determine your drive time from that region to Monteverde.

Monteverde to Arenal: 3-1/2 to 4 hours
Arenal to Tamarindo:3 to 4 hours
Tamarindo to Liberia: 45 min to 1 hr.

Exact times will depend on traffic and weather. If taking a 'tico' buses, it will take longer depending on how many stops are made.

Arenal to Tamarindo is about 4 hours in good weather; the road is narrow and very winding around the lake until you get to Tilaran (potholes abound and there is a stretch of about 1/2 hour with no pavement), then from Tilaran to Liberia is all good. If you get motion sickness at all, the road from Arenal to Tilaran can really make you sick. Liberia to Tamarindo is 45 minutes and the road is very good except for about 3-4 km right before Tamarindo which is unpaved and can get really dusty.

Thanks Ally & Iza. We will be staying on Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste.

Also, what is the travel time between Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste & Arenal? We’re considering just going to Arenal & skipping Monteverde. Will we miss out on too much if we do this?

Thanks again.
Travel time in the Guanacaste area can be affected by more than just pot holes. I was held up for quite awhile by cattle being moved along the road when going from Flamingo to Monteverde. LOL Good kodak moments
