Travel insurance for CR Trip

We will be in CR in December. I have never purchased travel insurance but want to do so for this family vacation. Any advice about a good group to purchase through, and what I should be sure is included. I talked to our health care plan and they were pretty evasive about what would be covered should we have any medical emergencies in CR. Thanks!

You can compare coverages and premiums for just about every travel policy available at:
www.insuremytrip.com

If I were you I check again with your health care plan provider as IT IS IMPORTANT for you to know if your plan provides coverage while you are traveling. If necessary ask to speak with a supervisor.

While you are talking to them, be sure to get a telephone number for your insurance company that can be called from outside the US. The usual 800 number will not work.

My health insurance company doesn't cover any expenses out of the country. I've always used Travelguard & been satisfied. You can compare the different coverages offered on their website. I always look for one that includes medical evacuation. God forbid you get hurt there & want to be flown home it would be very expensive without the insurance. I would check with your health insurance company again to find out if they'll cover anything out of the country. During one trip my daughter had
to be treated for strep throat. There was no charge for the doctor & the antibiotic was $20, I submitted the bill to travelguard & they reimbursed me no problem.

I used CSA Travel Insurance. I was in a serious auto accident in Costa Rica and they paid the full claim promptly. As od 2 years ago, they were the cheapest.

I have taken out TravelGuard probably 25+ times in 39 yrs. of travel. I have had 3 claims from $340 to $4600. Knowning from the policy what receipts I needed I was reimbursed within 10 days to 2 weeks on all claims no questions asked except for a $55 expense on a $2100 expense. I hear AcesssAmerica is almost as good but I stay with what works. If you take out the policy within 15 days of putting down the FIRST DEPOSIT on the trip it covers all pre-existing conditions which in our case was one of our medical expenses. It is expensive only for older travels because of the medical coverage and I take the best policy the offer. If you are going off the beaten track in CR it is wise to take it. For example you can call TravelGuard and if the illness is fairly severe they will dispatch a medi-jet to your location and not just take you to a hospital but a Center of Excellence for your possible condition. They fly a friend of mine from the remote Redang Islands in Malaysia to Bangkok which has one of the finst hospital in Asia. They would have taken he and his wife to Hong Kong if he prefer but that added a few hours to the flying time. It could cost $700-$800 for a family of say 4 or 5 but you have coverage from "soup-to-nuts".
