Christmas vacation

I need to arrange a vacation for our family of 6 adults and it has to be over Christmas week. I would love to keep the costs down, though I know it's the most expensive week for travel. WE live in NYC, Boston and Los Angeles, so Mexico or Central America seems reasonable. Would love ideas about cutting the costs, maybe an off the beaten path destination, a house vs 3 hotel rooms, etc. We like to be active and are all fit. Thanks in advance.

I have no good specific suggestion but I think your idea of "off the beaten path" is what you'll need to do. For example, I love Puerto Vallarta but prices are sky-high Christmas week (like hotel rooms double in price).

Fly spirit.com down from LAX BOS NYC save a tonne into Cancun

http://www.vrbo.com/.../yucatan-maya...tana-roo/tulum

Cute little cabanas on a beautiful beach in Tulum

around www.xel-ha.com might be cheap fun...

Never wire money always pay with CC/Paypal and insuremytip.com

Also most reviews on vrbo tripadvertizer are owner

culled/censored so do careful research on your own.

It's a little late to get the best deals but I suggest you fly into Cancun and stay at a 3 bed condo on the beach in Akumal.
Swim with turtles right on the beach, snorkel at Yal-Ku lagoon, see the Mayan ruins at Tulum or spend a day at Xel-Ha. Plenty to do nearby that's inexpensive.
Hotels in Cancun charge triple or quadruple the rates of low season for Christmas week.

Look for condos on www.vrbo.com or www.locogringo.com

We'll be there this Christmas!

Here's a link to one condo I looked at. I've stayed at La Sirena but not at this particular condo http://www.vrbo.com/40079
