Transportation in Guatemala

Hello,
Any tips on getting around in Guatemala? We'd like to see the main sights, but trying to save money. Not interested in any luxuries or tour guides. We're traveling in a few weeks and would appreciate any tips.

We did not use them but the chicken buses where everywhere. We didn't see any that were overflowing like we had heard of but I guess it is possible. Many are brightly painted with the chrome polished and really fun looking.

We used a transport company and for a transfer to Atitlan (from the airport),then to Antigua, and back to the airport it was about $260. The name of the company was Turansa.

There are a few companies that do shuttle bus transfers that I have used and they have all been on time and relatively inexpensive... Here's one company I have used: http://www.transportguatemala.com/sta.htm

I traveled on the chicken buses throughout Guatemala and had no difficulties. Given the roads accidents happen but that's true anywhere. Dependining on the route, day and time...sometimes they were packed (even by their standards!) but everyone was friendly, making sure they helped you get off where you were suppose to. Cheap and a great way to get around.
