While in Costa Rica , where to stay and see Arenal at night
We will be in the Arenal area for 2 nights in mid august. Does anyone know which hotels have the best or at least decent views of the volcano? We won't have a car but I understand there are plenty of taxis. Also does anyone know anything about the Chachagua Rainforest Hotel? It's a few miles south of town but I don't know if you can even see the volcano from there. Thanks my friends.

According to this web site: http://www.arenal.net/arenal-costa-rica-map.htm
(and other comments I've seen on the web tend to confirm this) the best views currently are to the west and southwest. We will be staying next week at the Arenal Observatory Lodge, which is in that zone and is also the closest hotel to the volcano. Bear in mind that the volcano is frequently covered by clouds, and I would imagine that this is worse during the rainy season (such as mid August).

We stayed at the Lost Iguana when we went. It's set a little outside of town and has amazing volcano views right from the balconies of the rooms. When we went the lava was flowing on that side, and we got to see it every night - amazing. The flow changes though, so unfortunately no guarantees. They have an open air restaurant with volcano view also. Have fun - we absolutely loved Arenal.
If you have time, check out Cano Negro to see amazing wildlife; it was one of the highlights of our trip.

I have stayed at Chachagua several times and I love it. You can't see the lava from there, but Aventuras Arenal will pick you up there for excursions to Cano Negro, the hanging bridges, etc. If you go to Chachagua, please tell Rocio, Miguel and Ceci that I said "hi"

Thanks for the info everyone. The Lost Iguana looks great as does the Conservatory. How about the Hotel Linda Vista. It appears to be on the same side as the Conservatory. Anybody know anything about this place?

If you go to arenal.net there's a map of the hotels and their location in relation to the volcano. The volcano is surrounded by hotels that offer splendid volcano views. However, if you want lava view this of course will depend on current lava view (also frequently updated on arenal.net). We had a marvelous volcano view from our bungalow at El Campo del Silencio, with no obstacles or other hotels to take away from it's beauty, so we really loved it there.
