Trails at Selva Verde
 

One other question for those of you Selva Verde experts!

They told me the guided hikes are increasing in price.

How are the trails throughout the property? I can't imagine we'd pay for more than one guided hike with all of us. I know you can't go across the bridge without a guide....so is there is "enough" to see and explore on the property?

I saw a lot on my own, as well as on two guided hikes. Walk across the street, there is a pretty garden area then you can choose to take the gravel road or the paved steps up towards the cabins. I stayed up in the cabins and saw toucans, frogs, monkeys and bats. It's very quiet and not many people go up there.

Our best hiking was down across the bridge in the reserve, but on our own we saw tons of poison dart frogs, especially those little green and black ones, iguanas, and we saw some toucans and aracaris. On the guided hike we saw howlers and a kinkajou, some bats, lots of birdlife, and a coral snake. We did an early morning birding hike, a day hike, and a night hike.

We didn't get a chance to see the reserve across the river thanks to a flood/earthquake that destroyed the bridge.

But you see a ton of stuff on the pathways around the lodge.

Plus, there's great wildlife at La Selva, Tirimbina, etc so I can't imagine that the wildlife at the Selva Verde reserve would be anything less than stellar.

We thought the wildlife at La Selva was even better than at Selva Verde. We saw a pack of peccaries there - very cool.
