KVR just because you cant figure out a post doesn't make it trolling. You choose not to rent a car which is your right but that is living in fear of the bite. I choose not to be fearful of the bite and do rent cars in Mexico and have paid the rare bite.

Kstzar, to each their own, and the majority of your posts are trolling for arguments, are inaccuarate, and non helpful to the OP and anyone else reading it, which is annoying.

Emd3, thanks. We just returned from New Orleans. Had a great time, but total sticker shock. This is why we love Mexico and all inclusives. Can only do full pay vacations like that every so often. However, our next destination is looking like Puerto Rico. Another full pay vacation. At least this trip put things into prespective.

Wow 4,200 pesos you were way too generous. I have been living in Mexico for quite a few years and the infraction table could go as follow for foreigners:

Common infraction such as cellphone while driving, red light, etc. 200 pesos
Combination of infractions or something more serious 500 pesos
Driving under light/moderate influence: 1000 pesos (definitely better than 48 hours of jail)

I understand that you might not have time to deal or were stressed to be pulled over. Next time, stay calm, tell them to write you a ticket and let them retain your license. I do this all the time and never managed to see a ticket.. If they retain my license I just get a new one they have absolutely no information systems to see that you owe a fine. Believe it or not you can also ask them for change. One day I even managed to give them half what they wanted by folding and hiding the bills in their tickets pad.

thanks vbilodeau... I must've looked like money to them with my huge Nikon in the backseat.......blonde wife in the front seat. I dunno.. more likely I just looked like the clueless American that had a flight to catch. I replay the event in my head with alternate scenarios and outcomes: one where I tell them I could only get 500 pesos out of the ATM... one where I demand a ticket...even one where I completely drive off. it's pointless though because A.) what happened happened and B.) I don't plan on renting a car in Mexico again anytime soon
