Toilets in Peru...Squat or throne?
 

We are planning a trip to Macchu Pichu, Cuzco, and Lima. We have experienced the squat type toilets in China, Turkey, Morroco, and other places and can easily handle it, but our friends will not join us on this trip unless there are "pedestal thrones". This will be an escorted tour, and no hiking is involved.
Is this a problem??

All the toilets I saw in Peru were the throne type. However, be sure to bring your own toilet paper.

I was in Lima, Cusco and at Machu Pichu. All the accomdations were modern and really quite eligant.

I assume by "squat type" you mean holes in the ground. My cousin and I travelled thru Peru and encountered those quite frequently (especially in the outlining areas). Bring toilet paper, and hand cleaners. If you come across a facility with real toilets and stalls, check the wall for the toilet paper before you go in the stall (it won't be in the separate stalls) and in most instances you can't flush the toilet paper (have to put it in wastebaskets). Also, I don't know if you thought about this, but I would advise bringing some type of altitude sickness pills (or herbs). I experienced a/s in Cuzco big time.

I'm sorry...but I think this is the most ridiculous posting I've seen this far. If people are not willing to go to a country because of the types of toilet facilities, and instead of experiencing culture, nature, food, architecture, etc etc etc ....it's pretty RIDICULOUS.

While it may seem ridiculous to you, our friend is handicapped and cannot squat. We have experienced the culture, food, architecture etc. in many other countries with them without anyone taking a cheap shot at their preferences.

Since you mention an escorted tour, couldn't the tour company answer this specific question for you? They should know better where exactly you are going and what the facilities will be like. I think this will more accurately answer the question, than other people's various experiences throughout the entire country especially those who travel more off-the-beaten-path than you will be, perhaps.

My apologies, as I don't mean any disrespect to your friend. I agree with Suze that you should find a more accurate information from your travel agent and let them know what your friend's specific needs are.

Thank you all.We now have all the info we need. Suze,we had already checked with our tour company and got some info, but my wife & I frequently explore on our own while we are on tour which is what prompted my question. Our friends will join us on the tour, but will not venture off with us. Now, let's put this unintentially contoversial question behind us.

The only place we encountered 'squat' toliets in three weeks in Peru(as the only available ones at the time) were in the Pisco Market. Other times we would find squat and thrones. Happy travels. Peru is fantastic.

It all depends on where you are at that precise moment. In Latin America you will find from the most luxurous bathrooms to a hole on the floor. It is a good idea to always bring with you toilet paper or wet towels. If you look foreign, most hotels would let you use their toilets, incredible but true.
