Mme, I'd say that guide is pretty accurate. Although if it were me staying at the St Regis, I'd probably leave $100 mxn/day for housekeeping. I tend to tip according to my room rate, as in the more I pay per night, the more I tend to tip. But yeah, for our typical hotel stay in the $50-$80 US/night, $50 mxn as the article mentioned is about right. I will mention that if the OP happens to buy something from a grocery store (not OXXO's) with baggers, they work exclusively for tips. A 10 peso tip for 1 bag with a couple of items would be OK. Speaking of OXXO's, some becoming more common is someone opening the door for you at OXXO's. Could be a kid, could be an older man or woman. A peso or 2 is OK.
As far as how much cash to bring, that depends on your interests. Generally, cash is king for markets & street food vendors. For a week, I'd probably start with $2000 mxn I suppose, and withdraw more from an atm if needed. There are plenty of ATM's at the airport. Banorte & Santander are good for lower fees. The sooner you can break larger bills down into 50's, the better. If. Hoard any coins for use in public restrooms.
