Tikal

Hi. My husband and I will be taking a day trip to Tikal, Guatemala from the San Ignacio, Belize area. Who is the best tour operator we should go with for the day or should we try to go on our own? We'll have a rental car from Crystal Auto Rentals.

We did it with Pacz Tours, and they were excellent.

I recommend against driving yourselves, partly because of the added stress and not having insurance in Guatemala (credit card insurance wouldn't be recognized) and partly because traveling with a good guide adds so much value - the whole trip would be interesting and informative. My recommendation would be to have Marlon Díaz meet you at the border and deliver you back there at the end of your day; if you get an early start you could consider a visit to Yaxhá, too, and a traditional Guatemalan lunch at El Portal de Yaxhá. Here's a link to Marlon's website: www.gemtrips.com

For what it's worth, an overnight to Tikal is so worth it in my opinion - so wonderful to explore the jungle and Maya site during the cooler evening and early morning hours when wildlife is active and you practically have the place to yourselves. If you just can't spare the extra night, though, still go.

My photos with blog links on the main page of each collection are below in case you're interested - all my recommendations are embedded there.

Happy trails!

I just got back from Tikal. I would not hesitate to do it solo. There are excellent signs and maps in the park. If you decide that you want a guide, there is no shortage to choose from at the park entrance.

The TripADvisor Belize forum has several reports from people who have driven rental cars to Tikal without problems. Crystal Auto Rental is one company that allows cars to go to Guatemala, but you have to give them prior notice so they can prepare the paperwork.

I went alone (years ago), staying in Flores, which I loved. So different than the central region.
