Haven't stayed there either, but we almost rented a villa called Macumba one year, which is right next to your resort. I think that area will be lovely - more mellow for sure, but you can't walk to town, which we like. As long as you are down there you should take a day trip (or just a boat ride for an hour or so) to Yelapa, which is by far my favorite place in the PV area.

what are the hotels you liked in the Mayan. I've been to both the Mayan and PV 20 times each over the last 20 plus years so have lost of experience with traveling to both. Have stayed at our toured many resorts/hotels/condos so any questions just ask away.
We also travel with kids, so if by family you mean kids, I have lots of experience in that area as well.
We love both areas, but they are very different. The Mayan has the most beautiful beaches and water and swimming in it is so wonderful. They have so much history with the ruins and cenotes you could spend so much time exploring all that.
PV is more of a town with the dark blue water and darker, coarser sand. It is definitely not as nice as the Mayan that way, but it is prettier with the mountains and jungle area surrounding it. You can walk around town here just as you can in Playa or Puerto Morelos or Tulum with PV being much bigger than the latter two.
They are both great, just depends on what you want.
