NW is amazing, the most colourful mountians, the best wines, the best empanadas all over te world, goat cheese, the best ice-cream... There is no reason not to come to Salta and Jujuy.
The landscape is varied and it worth a visit. And about the weather?
Sun shines all the time, and it is not as hot as Buenos Aires in summer. It is dry and the altitude makes cool nights and mornings. If you stay in the sun you can melt but in the shade, it is great.

iam thinking about the NW as a break form the mid January heat in Bs As. What itinerary might you suggest for 4 days? Would there be any options for lake or river swimming to cool off during the heat of the day ?

Hello, David:
I suggest not to miss Cafayate Killa Hotel is an option- Purmamarca - Tilcara and the Salt Flats. Stay in Purmamarca one nigth, Manantial del Silencio is a nice place to stay in and it has a great swimming pool for you to enjoy it. Bring sun lotion and lipsticks, a jacket for the nigth something not too warm but you will need some.

AndrewDavid: You can do it byy car driving bu yourself or a regular tour, or a private tour qith a driver and guide. It is up to you.
The temperatures in January are the higher in the year, but nobody melts. At night it cools down, and it can rain deep and hard for a short time. But bring a jacket for the nigth.
The temperature in Salta city could reach in the warmest days 35 degrees centigrades, at noons and about 18-20 in the night, in the Calchaquies Valleys as Cachi or Cafayate, it is cooler at night maybe 12 degrees, or
Oran or Tartagal ARE NOT recommended to visit in summer but that is in the NE of the province close to the bolivian border.
Salta is dry and the 35 degrees in the shade is not as bad ad people think. There are some posts from people who have been in summer and found Salta much bearable ( not humidity) than BA.
Do not miss it.
