Tequila Recommendations

Does anyone have anny recommendations for nice, boutique tequilas? I'll be in Jalisco this summer, and I'd bring back as many as customs will allow.

I had some amazing tequilas last time I was in Mexico City, but I never wrote the name down. One I remember in particular had a label designed by Diego Rivera. I thought I could just find them at the airport or in the US, but no ... even the high-end tequilas here don't compare with the boutique ones I had.

Dear Hisurfer:

Sorry, I am not a tequila expert, but when we were in PV in Dec. a couple we met from Colorado looked high & low for Patron' tequila. You may also want to check the Forums on Tripadvisor an ask your question there. More action on their Mexico board.

I'm a wine drinker, but love some high end Cognacs and Tequilas in tiny neat doses:
El Tesoro de Don Felipe Anejo (the last of its kind: produced entirely by hand)is my fav so far.

Thanks both! I'll check tripadvisor; that's a new one to me.

I think Patron is available pretty widely in the US now. And while I like it - it's my choice for top-end but still affordable tequila in the US - it pales next to some of the boutique tequilas we had.

Don't know if you like mezcal, but this one sounds interesting http://www.mezcal.com/pechuga.html A trip to Oaxaca will expand your horizons beyond tequila.

Hi, something helpful...
Most mexicans stay clear from the white tequila, itīs way too strong look instead for the softer reposado or añejo.
Don Julio is a good not too strong one... but any well established liquor store in mexico will help yopu find your way
Pick up some sangrita as well so you can drink it banderita style
Good luck

My favorite is Don Julio Anejo. But I'm able to buy tequila in the Minneapolis area cheaper than I can purchase it in Mexico.

Hi, I stayed with some Mexican friends in Jalisco last summer. They recommended Don Julio as the best value for the money. Also we purchased it at a grocery store and it was much cheaper than at the airport 'duty free'.
