Telephoning home?
I will be staying in Mexico for 2 months and would like to know the cheapest way to call home.
My husband worked in Mexico in '97 & we found the cheapest way was to preset a time and I would call him. The calls from there to home were extremely high, finally we just set a time and he would be in his room. Or, you call, and then let they call you back. At least you only pay for a minute or two. Check with the telephone Company, becase there are certain phones to use to get a cheaper rate, than going through the hotel. I was very happy the company there reimbursed us!!! :)

Hi...buy a phone card....they are available everywhere. If you buy one for 100 pesos, you just put it in the phones that take cards and talk until your time runs out. I usually call the states on Sunday with a 100 peso card and can talk for about 20 min. They give you a little warning beep so you know your time is just about it. Or call collect!
MCI has an 800 operator that people can use to call your home from Mexico. They have 2 different numbers for Spanish and English. The rates are the same as if you initiated the call from the US. We use it frequently as we have a lot of family living in Mexico. The typical; rates are 0.25 /min from zone 1 and 0.49 /min from zone 3. This is a lot better than $9.00 USD /min that I was once charged for a collect call from Mexico. That was less than 2 years ago.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use any of the pay phones offering big advertisements for collect calls to the US!!!! I knew it would be expensive, but I had to call to check on my ill mom, and had forgotten to get the international code for our calling card. Try $56 for a ten minute call!!!!!!
