Tegucigalpa, Honduras
 

I'm traveling to Tegucigalpa, Honduras the first of August and would like someone's insight on what to expect (hotels, restaurants, etc.)

<BR>Hi, <BR> <BR>I have been to Honduras twice within the last couple of months. <BR> <BR>First, the people are very friendly. Some people get nervous around all the security that is armed. It is a long tradition for security to be armed. <BR> <BR>I'm not sure where you will be staying, but there are a number of hotels that are very nice. The Hotel Princess, Honduras Mayan and the Plaza San Martin are all nice. The Princess is the most spendiest, good food, and almost brabd new. They are still working out the kinks in the rooms. <BR> <BR>The Mayan is very nice, good food, nice pool, and the night life there is active. <BR> <BR>The San Martin is a little slower pace, food is not as good, and no pool. Do you know of any b/b's???

I have not been there since working on relief for Hurricane Mitch in 1998. I don't know what's changed since then. At that time it was a bit dangerous. I saw one of our group attacked and robbed in the street. Locals we were with advised to keep car doors locked at all times and be highly vigilant. I am sure there are some high end places that are very nice. Besides that there wasn't much. I am sure things have improved greatly since the devastation of the hurricane.Being one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere you will still need to be on guard, particularily in Tegus. On the other hand the people are wonderful and there is some great scenery, make sure to go up to el valle de los angeles outside of Tegus.

I was there about a year ago for a couple days before we went on to Copan for Spanish School. I stayed at the Humuya Inn (which I reviewed on tripadvisor.com), which was a small, comfortable place that was larger than a B&amp;B but much smaller than a major hotel. The staff were all extremely friendly, called us by name, arranged a driver to Valle de los Angeles (a pleasant excursion out of the city, as Dude suggests), helped us change money, etc. I don't have a good sense of the layout of the city and how close Humuya is to the things you'd like to do, but check it out.

As for food, we ate at Humuya (great basic fare) and had fabulous pinchos de cerdo at a little outdoor restaurant in Valle when we were there for the day.
