I'm disappointed to hear of the declien in fod quality at Manati. I really do like the atmpshere there and they served one of the only two decent cappuccinos I had in Cozumel when I visited (the other was at Guido's). If it was not already mentioned I'll add La Cocay to the list of restaurants worth visiting. Food was as good or better than La Veranda at about the same price (or less) and thre intimate atmosphere and attention from the owner were very rewarding to us (my GF and I share the same birthday - they did special decorations on our dessert without our requesting it and comped our dessert. Very thoughtful.

I also loved trying the "commida corrida" at the local loncherias. If you don't mind eating your main meal earlier in the day (i.e. by 5 PM or 5:30 PM at the latest), it's a great deal and the food is often really good. Lots of little hole in the wall places that offer this and it's typically $4 - $5 for the entire meal incl non-alcoholic beverage.

Pedro at Villas las Ancles (where we stayed on our first visit) has advised me that a widow who lives across from his property has opened a small cafe open for breakfast and lunch only - he says the fod is great and cheap. We didn't have a chance to to try it as we there only for the day this time. I believe they're on Calle 5 near Avenida 3.

Thanks for the tip, Owen. I'll give it a look when we're there in February.

Hey TC, We've been to Cozumel approximately 13 times ourselves, and last year I went with your trip report in hand. You've pointed us in the direction of restaurants we never would have tried or found. Thank You!

2004 Update: Just returned from this year's holiday. Once again, I loved Cozumel. Yes, its a bit busier than in previous years. More traffic and more traffic signals. Lots of beach buzz this year. New beach restuarants at Playa Capi and Dzul Ha (in construction phase). All the old favorite restaurants are still in town and are still great. El Moro was busy Carnival week. Snorkeling was better than ever. Seemed to be more fish, larger fish and lots of new growth on sponges and coral. A very good sign. Visablity was excellent in February. Rented cars from CP Rental this year for $25 per day for VW convertible or new hardtop. Good cars, no hassles. New addition on airport arrival hall is complete. Still slow to clear customs and receive luggage, but hey, its Mexico. Be mindful of the touts as you exit the arrival hall. The Cancun timeshare guys are all over the place and "pretend" to be representing the transportation vans in order to get your attention. Tickets for transportation to hotels are sold at a little booth to the left. Will add more as I think of it. Email with questions if you like. I shall try to answere. [email protected]
