Taxis in Oaxaca and Mexico City

In thinking about visits to various villages and their markets outside of Oaxaca city, I am wondering if there are an abundance of taxis driving around that I can flag down, with colectivo and private. Can I take Uber from the airport to TAPO, or are there certain taxis I should look for?

Thanks

There are taxis both private and shared at Oaxaca's airport. You'll see the desk where you book them. Your hotel will call a cab or car for you. You'll also find them cruising. There are also organized small van tours to the various villages, Monte Alban and Mitla.

In Oaxaca I used colectivos to & from an out of town market, the occasional local bus, an in town taxi once in a while, shared van from the airport & walked a lot.

During the winter season a group called 'Hoofing It in Oaxaca' does walks in the countryside, some ending at a craft village. It's a really nice way to see the area, transport provided. They're affiliated with the Oaxaca Lending Library & have a website where you can check out the schedule & reserve a spot.

We used Uber almost exclusively in Mexico City and it worked really well. The exception was FROM the bus stations and the airport where we used taxis form the official booths. Uber does pick up from those places but it was just easier to get taxis on arrival.

In Oaxaca we used collectivos to go to Monte Alban and one day hired a car and driver via our accomodation to take us out to various villages, markets and sights in the valleys. Cost was 200peso per hour - well worth the money.
