Taxi or Rental Car Cancun
We will have 6 adults traveling in Cancun in Nov. Are we better off renting 2 small cars or using taxis and buses?
Car rental is cheap but have heard that it is necessary to carry their insurance to cover theft or collision and that is more costly than the price of the rental. Is insurance necessary, should we just use cabs? Please help.

For travel to and within the Cancun Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun - taxi or public bus.
For travel to ruins - tour buses.
For travel to other towns - Playa del Carmen, etc. - rental car(s).
Let me know if you need more specific info on why, and I'll be glad to post it.

A car might be a good idea for going to Playa del Carmen (it also gives you a chance to do other stuff -- stop off at Xel Ha, Xcaret, Tulum, etc.)
A car isn't going to help you get to Isla Mujeres -- not unless it's an amphibious car. There are regular buses running through the Hotel Zone that go direct to the ferry docks at Puerto Juarez -- 6 pesos (60 cents) per person, sure beats messing with trying to find parking, worrying about the car, expenses, etc.
Have fun!

Yes, I would not hesitate to leave a car at the port in Cancun, but you will NEVER find a parking space in PDC if you plan to take the ferry over to Coz.
Take a bus or taxi to PDC, and you can walk right down to the ferry dock and not have to worry about your car.
Parking is a mess in PDC, and we never get a car when we stay there until we are moving on to somewhere else.

Just regarding the insurance question. Yes, Mexican insurance is absoluteley necessary. You are under nepolianic law- guilty until proven inocent. The higher the level of insurance the better. Some levels include an attorney if needed which is wise. Insurance is better than your vacation, or even more time in jail.

If you want to get a price or arrange any private transportation or a special night out, please try my friends at Royale Tours www.royaletours.com.mx Ask for Jorge Garcia but anyone can help you-they are wonderful with assisting you when in Cancun. It may or may not be cost effective, but you may want to splurge and arrange it for the tour day maybe. Have Fun !

You can take a bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen for just a few dollars. They run very frequently. Personally, I wouldn't bother with a car, unless there it would be a one day rental to head to some places that it would be difficult to get to by bus.
