I have never heard of Tauck Tour - can you give us some more information about the trip they are proposing for you?

OK - I just went to their website (should have done this first, duh) and their tour looks great. There is a lot of moving around so you can consider it a "sampler" of Costa Rica. Of course, they want you to see as much as possible and with all arrangements made for you as well as transportation, it shouldn't be stressful. I am familiar with the places mentioned and the descriptions are good and I know some of the hotels mentioned and they are very nice.

I like the idea that they mix more "famous" places like Monteverde with staying at a remote lodge near the Rio San Carlos.

I don't know anything about the price or reliability of this company but this is an excellent tour.

www.costaricexpeditions.com best for custom tours...

They own all all their own lodges in the best area

not a big fan of group tours AM bus calls so I prefer that..

or just DIY rent a car stay in

nice upscale properties and bop around

what I usually do to save...Happy Hunting

any problem with rent car and going on your own? this will be first time here. thanks for the replies. VERY helpful to me.

No problem with renting a car and going on your own if you want to. It just means more time and energy put into doing your own research and making your own reservations. But - you will have the advantage of going when and where you please.

As for driving - think of the roads in Costa Rica as two-lane, back-country roads wherever you live. Some areas are very mountainous and have up and down curvy roads. Others are smooth, straight and flat. If you enjoy driving and don't mind slowing down for bikes, pedestrians and the occasional cow, you will be fine. Check here for distances and driving times:

Haven't been to Costa Rica with Tauck, but have taken other tours with them. They are first class...great service..good organization..MANY choices when dining. Can't go wrong with them.

Thanks again for the advice. It has been very helpful, and we are now planning to go ahead with the Costa Rica Tauck adventure end of January!
