Tankah/Soliman Bay via Cancun
Planning a 2 wk trip to casa in Soliman Bay and plan to rent a car at airport in Cancun however flight arrives in Cancun at 10pm and would like to buy supplies/groceries to take to house in well stocked, moderately priced store (Walmart,ect) plus get as far from Cancun as possible (if not all the way to Soliman Bay that night) or stay in a modest,clean place for the night. We're traveling from Alaska,though hearty, anticipate being tired. Having not been to the area before we seek advice from someone familiar with the area. Also, Any comments on Soliman Bay? Thank you!

Rosemary;

We just got back from there after renting a house in Tankah, Tres Delfines. You might just want to stay in cancun that night because its an hour or so drive south to tankah. only good grocery store close to tankah is in playa del carmen which is about 30 minutes south of cancun and 30 minutes north of tankah. maybe you could stay in playa del carmen the night you arrive. most hotels will pick you up at the airport. i have lots i can tell you. tulum is really really cool with lots of really cool bars and restaurants. ask questions, i can answer for you.

Thanks, I do have questions!! You mention Tulum as cool, what was your impression of the 2 bays. I understand there is a construction boom underway-is it still private. Are the beaches nice, white, fine sand, clean? The water looks shallow, how's the swimming, foot covering recommended? Is there a place near to rent snorkel gear or good snorkeling in the bay. I realize this could vary but is the atmosphere family, single, retired?? Is a phone readily available in the area for calls to the states? Mosquitoes, rodents, spiders, scorpions. Is it a safe place for teens to explore independently, hikes, burgers in the restaurant, etc. Can you recommend a hotel in PDC?
Rosemary;

which two bays are you referring to? Soliman and Tankah Bay? both are nice but you need snorkel shoes to enter both bays. both are rocky and lots of coral. i would bring own snorkel gear. best snorkeling i found was on the beach in front of the oasis akumal resort. great snorkeling there. i do not know a place to recommend in playa for lodging. the oasis is an all inclusive so you wouldnt want to stay there just one night. tulum has all types of people, family, retired, and singles. lots of italians down there thats for sure. the beaches are clean, but the waters off the shores of the tulum area tend to get full of seaweed. but not all the time. i guess it would be ok for a teenager to be on his/her own, but i cant talk much here. what house are you renting and on which bay? definately go down to the tulum area, visit the beaches and funky restaurants/bars. there are internet cafes everywhere and phones for that matter. anything else?
Rosemary;

I forgot to mention, there were no mosquitos when we were there because there was always a breeze, but i heard when the breeze stops then the mosquitos arrive also when it rains the mosquitos come out. we did not have any rain while we were there during the first week in july. when you ask safe for teenagers to explore what do you mean? on their own or just exploring on a beach. because exploring on the beach is perfectly safe. my kids did it everyday and they were fine. no scorpions or rodents that i saw, not even cockroaches.
