T tulum ruins and Xcaret

When in Playa, can anyone tell me whether it is worth a trip to the ruins in Tulum? Also was it worth a trip to Xcaret? Is it worth the expense in the theme park? Thank you

Definately worth a trip and to nearby unrestored ruins as well. Go early ... gets very hot and take lots of water! We also took the charter flight to Chichen-Itza and it was wonderful!

Yes! If you like ruins and the history part then the trip to Tulum is worth it. If you are seriously not into history and the story behind the ruins then don't bother. Let your interest level be your guide.
As for Xcaret - this has been described by Fodor's as a water Disney for adults. The price into the park includes the underground river swim, the butterfly pavillion or just hanging out in some isolated coves by the beach and the Mexican folklore show at night and just walking around the park to see what it has to offer. Then you can pay extra to swim with the dolphins, to snuba, to water walk on the bottom, etc, etc.
We loved Xcaret.

If you have any interest in the Maya or ancient sites, Tulum is interesting and the setting spectacular. If you only have time and/or interest in seeing one Maya site, go to Chichen Itza -- you will be overwhelmed by the structures and carvings. Tulum was built during the latter phases of the Maya period and isn't nearly as imposing. Chichen Itza is indescrible.

We spent one half of a day at the ruins(which was plenty of time for us) in Tulum and then a couple of hours shopping in Tulum. Also consider going to Xel-Ha instead of Xcaret. We LOVED Xel-Ha. Definitely need an entire day for that place.
Debbie
