Switch from Cancun to Playacar

Have reservations at the Omni Cancun in late May, but after more research I have decided to change venues to the RIU Playacar. This change is more for location than property. The more I read about Playa de Carmen, the more it interests us. We are looking for a less busy smaller location where the nights are fairly quiet. Walk or quick cab ride to a local restaurant bar.

Am I way off base here? Will Playacar be just as busy as Cancun?

Cancun has very much a city feel to it. Large malls, high rise hotels. Lots and lots of concrete.

Playa del Carmen has much more of small town feel to it, althogh it's pretty busy. I haven't spent time in Playacar itself, but just from walking around, it feels suburban, rather than urban.

If you aren't looking for a city experience, I think you'll be happy in Playacar/Playa del Carmen. Jean

I've stayed at the Riu Playacar, and I think you're making a god choice. Playacar is more laid-back and more relaxed than Cancun. No high-rise buildings, no traffic. The town is a 30-minute walk or a 10-minute cab ride away, and there's also a nice shopping area directly across the street from the resort. You can use the facilities at any of the other Riu resorts in the area, too. Yes, the nights are quiet, but it is a very peaceful resort!

Playacar is like a subdivision. Lots of resorts and condos and golf courses. The Riu Playacar is pretty centered in these resorts and you can go to the other Riu properties as well. The Tequila and the Yucatan. The Riu Playacar has a nice stretch of beach.
You can walk around Playacar and take in all the beautiful places to stay or walk to Playa Del Carmen. Certainly not as busy as Cancun where there are resorts on top of each other. In Playacar the resorts are close but you would never know it. Secluded and lovely. Playa Del Carmen is a short walk or cab ride ($4.00 US) away if you want more night life or to shop on 5th Avenue (which is a must do).
We stayed at the Riu Tequila in February and it was terrific. Food fabulous at all RIU resorts with lots to do or lounging by the pool or beach.
Enjoy yourselves.
