Suggestions for remote lodging in the Peten?
I'm spending 9 days in Guatemala. After seeing Tikal, I was hoping to spend a couple of nights at a jungle lodge in the Peten. I'd like to find something that's a bit more remote than the offerings around in the immediate area around Tikal and Flores; maybe a boatride and a hike to get there, something like that. I''m interested in seeing birds and other wildlife, hiking, ruins, the usual. Does anyone have any suggestions for an interesting stay?
I was considering Chiminos Lodge but I hear there are some serious problems there as far as staffing and supplies so I'm hesitant to book it. Does anyone know about that? |
I will be interested to see the responses and where you decide to go. We are just back from a trip to Guatemala. We saw only Tikal in the Petén but would have loved to visit some of the other Mayan ruins in the area. We drove through Sayaxché en route from Tikal to Cobán and would have liked to stop in that area to see Ceibal and/or the ruins around Lago de Petexbatun. Our Rough Guide to Guatemala gives the Chiminos Lodge a good review but it is several years old so could be outdated.

Try the Sombero Campero and lodge in Yaxha. It is 4 km's down the road from these cool ruins.

We stayed at Chiminos 3 years ago. I should say, tried to stay. We left early and asked for our money back for the days we didn't stay. There was no argument from the owner who was not on the premises. The food wasn't very good, the ruins there really didn't amount to anything and the bugs were pretty bad. I am not terribly nervous around "wildlife" but there was just a little too much of it in the cabin for my comfort. We hired our own guide while at another hotel in the El Remate area who ended up becoming a good friend and a great guide while we were in Tikal. He walked us all over the woods where tourists don't normally go and we saw tons of great birds. He came to Chiminos with us and helped us get a boat to get out of there early.

Stairgod, did you reserve online? I sent an e-mail and didn' get reply. Also, the prices page is in Spanish only. Do remember what you paid?
Suzie thanks for the tip on Chiminos. Sounds familiar. |
