Suggestions for a 2 week trip to Mexico
 

Hi,
I'm hoping some people will be able to give me some suggestions! Me and my partner are flying to Mexico for 2 weeks (for the first time) from the end of April-May. We are flying into Mexico City, and would quite to look to spend half a week at the beginning and half a week at the end in the city (ish).
Other than that, I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do and where to go! We don't want to head to Cancun/go for an AI package. We'd be interested in seeing historical ruins, and also we both enjoy food, so I was thinking perhaps to head towards Oaxaca.
Does anyone have any ideas as to places to go, and also also how to get there (eg flying..)?
In terms of budget, for accommodation and travel costs, we'd be looking at spending around £800. (Not sure if this is realistic, over the odds, or not enough, so feedback would be helpful).

Huge question. There's all kinds of inland places to see around DF. Puebla, San Miguel, Guanajuato, Zacatecas. Do you want beach time? The Caribbean coast south of Cancun to Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tulum, gets you near ruins. Isla Muerjes is an island off Cancun. For the beach though, actually you're closer to the Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Mazatlan. Of course Oaxaca is a fine destination, again with lots of other towns nearby. The Fodor's general travel guidebook for 'Mexico' covers all these spots nicely actually.

Do you intend to hire a car? Best way to get around IMO but it might stretch your budget of approx $1200 US.

There's much more to the Yucatan peninsula than Cancun and AI packages. This region has plenty of Mayan ruins including Tulum, Coba, Ek Balam and Chichen Itza.
Just google those and you'll be able to see images that might tempt you to fly onto Cancun!

Either Oaxaca or Puebla is a logical choice. For ruins and crafts I would choose Oaxaca; for historical colonial buildings I would choose Puebla and environs. Or you could choose to visit colonial cities to the north and return via Guadalajara.

We did not drive when visiting Mexico's colonial cities.

Thanks for the help so far. It seems pretty easy to get around by coach so I think that's what we'll do. Has anyone got any tips about Huatulco - we're thinking of possibly going there for a couple/few days from Oaxaca.

Puebla is good for a night or 2 since you can get a bus right from the airport. But any more than that and you'll probably wish you'd have spent more time in Oaxaca. Try to be in Oaxaca on a Sunday to catch the State Marimba Band. See if you can get up into the mountains for fresh trout, you'd probably need to hire a driver. Huatulco is cheapest if you stay in town and taxi to the beaches instead of doing the AI thing and being stuck just to the beach of the resort. Oaxaca is the best; music, mole, mezcal & museums.

Why not take a tour? we did, and had a wonderful time. It was very leisurely, driver knew some keen spots to show is that were not typical tourist stuff, we had lots of time on our own, and good hotels at the end of the day.??? consider it.

Depend which part to Mexico you would like to go. If you want to go the Center of Mexico, you should go to Mexico City, Puebla, Michoacan.
If you want to come to the South, Chiapas, Oaxaca is an excellent choice. there are good Ground Handler in Mexico who can help you. I recommend you Inco Travel is the biggest in Mexico with an excellent reputation.

Not in Mexico, but I'd highly recommend coming to Costa Rica, and if you do, you should really check out Pachamama - http://ow.ly/7MOYG. Place has been life changing for me and I just want more people to discover it :)

I'd check out puebla, via bus for local colonial culture and food, and/or Oaxaca, via bus or plane for the same as well as nearby ruins and beautiful mountains. You could catch a a-hour flight from oaxaca to huatulco, which has 7 bays with gorgeous beaches, often with few other people and friendly towns. In Huatulco, we stayed at a villa in the Conejos neighborhood, with a private cook at very reasonable cost (less than an AI cost, for sure) and extraordinary service. It was Villa Pacifico. Several others in the area that are highly recommended, too. I'd love to go to Oaxaca for some of their cooking classes. The land of the 7 moles, where chocolate started. Yum.
