Squeamish about House Bugs in Mexico
 

While visiting near Quadalajara, Mexico a plastic bag holding my shoes in my suitcase was shredded into confetti. Anyone have any idea what would chew my plastic bag? We found no evidence of mice or bug droppings in the room. I've laundered every article of clothing but I'm still squeamish about it.

We're in pretty isolated beach house on the Michoacan coast. Something crawled into my suitcase, drug out a plastic tube of body oil and pretty much ate the whole thing. Next night it gnawed a couple holes in a small plastic mouthwash bottle next to the sink. Next night it took my wife's meds that were in a plastic bag off of the nightstand. Next night a couple of bite marks on the toothpaste tube. Either a bat or a rat, I think in our case. Saw a tarantula our first day, don't think it'd be him.

Wifey just reminded me about a plastic tube of hand cream, too. Can't wait to see what tonight brings.

Holy moly, Baldone. I would be out of there in a minute. Rat or bat....

As a human, you are never more than 10 feet away from a rat--or so I have read. Even if that's not literally true, it's a reminder that we share the planet with creatures. I don't want them in my room, but there's no reason to freak out, either.

Bats won't come inside to eat things like that. My bet is rat or mouse.

The same thing happened to me (well sort of the same) on Islamorada at a pretty upscale resort last month. Left a zip loc bag of bread on the kitchen counter. Bag shredded, along with bread, the next morning. Lots of droppings on dresser and unused beds. So not only in Mexico!! Happily, they moved us to another cottage and took the charge off the bill.

Definitely not.

I don't think bugs can "shred" plastic. Seems like would have to be a rodent or reptile to do that?
