souvenirs from Mexico

Hi all

any tips on nice souvenirs from Mexico?

I am furnishing a new house and would like to get a few things for decorating. Where would be a good place to buy some scatter rugs, and what other 'typical' Mexican souvenirs might I want to think about?

I will have limited time to shop. If there is a specific market or shopping area to check out, please let me know!

thanks

Black clay pottery from Oaxaca makes a dramatic statement, beaded Huichol boxes, blown recycled glass vases and glassware, alberijes (?) wooden figurines, some quite fantastical, from oaxaca, (make sure they are signed and say Oaxaca) and everything from metal work to ceramic painted kitchen sinks can be found in Tlaquepaque. Also hand woven placemats, rugs, and tablecloths. As above poster said, some of these, or the best of these, can only be found in certain regions, but larger artesania shops in mexico city pretty much have it all.

One market that we thought was pretty good is called La Ciudadela, which is at Balderas and Ayuntamiento. According to what I just looked up here on Fodors, that's 4 blocks south of Avenida Juárez in Mexico City. They seemed to have a really good selection. We've done a lot of travelling in Mexico and have brought home many wonderful items. I especially like textiles - embroidery, weavings, etc. - quite easy to carry home. Good luck!
