Southern Belize Day Trips

What day trips are not to be missed in Southern Belize? We will be in Placencia from 1/18/11 to 1/23/11 and in Hopkins from 1/24/11 to 1/26/11. We would like to stop at the zoo on the 18th, on the way south, but haven't decided what else. We will have a rental car but enjoy group tours too. My boyfriend really enjoyed Lamanai on our first trip to Belize - which Mayan sites should we consider in southern Belize? Thanks guys

You can check the website http://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-gu...ips/placencia/. It has a nice list of things to do in Placencia and budget tips. It will really help in your trip planning.

From Hopkins, the nearest Maya site is Nim Li Punit on the Southern Highway near Punta Gorda (in Indian Creek village) - it is small but has some excellent stelae and there is a good chance you'll be the only visitors there as the Toledo district is very unspoilt. Lubaantun is a little further into Toledo, but is beautiful and you will drive through some beautiful rural Mayan villages to get there.

Hope you can see this while you are in Placencia. Monkey River Howler tour is terrific. Check in with www.exoticbelize.com for more information. Wonderful tour guide.

Hike the Jaguar Preserve and/or Bocawina Park; Cave trips, rapelling, horses, Red Bank village for the scarlet macaws, river and sea kayaking and of course diving, snorkeling, fishing and sailing.
