Snorkeling equipment in Akumal, etc?

We are making our first trip to Mexico and our kids are eager to try snorkeling. Will there be rental snorkel equipment at the popular snorkel locations or at shops around the area, or should we bring our own? The hotel website (Akumal Beach Hotel) does not mention snorkeling in its activities so I'm not sure they would have the equipment.

It's always best to bring your own. That way you know it will fit properly and you can use it whenever you like without having to worry about getting it and taking it back or the rental is out.

Monica: There is a dive shop in akumal (the "original akumal dive shop). You might do a search and see what they offer. Sorry I'm not of much help (I'm currently posting my own questions on akumal, trying to figure things out!).

They way I see it you have 3 choices.
1) Purchase your own and bring it with. Good advice particularly for the snorkel and mask. Fins can be rented. (I do this.)

2) Rent. Akumal has a couple places to rent and any tour companies you may choose will have equipment available.

3) Purchase at Walmart or Mega in Playa. At the end of your vacation you can donate to any of the many local kids you'll see on the beach.
They will be very appreciative and it's a nice way to return the favor to the host country.

MR,

we took our own masks and snorkels. both for quality and cleanliness. but, we rented fins and vests in akumal. there are two or three dive shops. you don't need to reserve ahead. make sure you go to the lagoon. it was really amazing! have fun.
