hi everyone,

so should i bring any clothing with me or just an empty suitcase:
what are prices like for high quality men's clothing, shoes, hiking gear, runners/trainers

compared to those in Canada or the US ( prices in the US are usually less than Canada esp since the 2 dollars are close to parity and we live near the border

I have found that the bargains are mixed here.
If you go for designers ( Armani. Zegna etc) you will pay the same .. no bargains.
If you buy Argentine brand names, you will pay less..but the quality is not always the same.
Same with shoes.
Don't know about hiking gear ( Scarlett does not hike ) lol...
I bought some stuff at Armani a few weeks ago, was able to enjoy the end of winter sales but they were still over $100 an item..so depends ( in a way) what is a bargain to you.
Leather from Argentina can be a bargain though..handbags and shoes .. but even there, watch for quality.

My friends all buy running shoes in the U.S. and leather dress shoes in Argentina. Prices for running shoes are aboutn 50 to 100% higher in Argentina. High quality dress shoes in Argentina (Guido or Lopez Taibo) run about US 100 per pair, more or less....the quality is outstanding. I buy Lopez Taibo and have never been disappointed.

If you catch a sale.....Christian LaCroix, Christian Dior and several other designers have outlets that sometimes offer bargain prices...James Smart offers more conservative British style clothing at decent but not spectacular prices....I have bought a number of men's dress shirts at Sir Greyton on Santa Fe near Callao.

I paid US 190 for a great Lacroix suit, as an example...and about US 40 for Christian Dior jeans, which, by the way, fit great....

u must have different weight limits on your flights than air canada does; i don't think they'll let us carry on furniture or have you chartered a freighter to ship those furnishings!!

Christian Lacroix "outlet" is on Juan F. Segui, between Sinclair and Godoy Cruz.

Christian Dior. There are a number of Christian Dior stores around town. The one on Cordoba downtown and the one on Lafinur 3057 in Palermo are the stores where I have had the best luck finding sales....

Some clothes are marked down year round...but the best time to shop is when seasons are changing...and stores mark down that season's merchandise to make room for the upcoming season's new styles.....This works well for Norte Americanos since our seasons are reversed....buy in Argentina at a discount, take your new duds home and wear them....

Well, let me tell you now, the good couches are no bargain here :D

My husband did well in the C Dior shop on Quintana and I did well in the shop in Patio Bullrich.

Zara is a very popular shop here for mens and womens clothing..they are here and there, prob Galleries Pacifico but there is a nice one on Santa Fe and in the Paseao Alcorta.

Ask if you need bathroom fixures or tile, I just finished that :D

so scarlett are you trying to unload your excess inventory of bathroom fixtures and tile on ross/ when i take the float plane to lake union in seattle i always carry my suitcase empty so on the return i can fill it w/ 25# ( the weight limit) of low priced american goods.ross is obviously coming down w/ his own empty shipping container.

Well, I have to tell you that the prices mentioned here are very low compared with Australia which is the rip off leader of the world! The idea of a pair of designer jeans for $50, even on sale, is boggling to me. We pay US 200 ++ for such things. So clearly I am going to bring empty suitcases!
Seriously - we are going to Antarctica and will need fleeces, gloves, a Gortex jacket etc. IS BA the place to buy them. We will be there in January which I hope might be sale time too.

LOL AndrewDavid..no, so far we don't have any excess but I have become an expert ( in my own mind) on where to buy it all :)

Sal..there are stores here that everyone goes to for their fleece etc for going to cold places..I know some friends went skiing a few months back and bought all sorts of gear .. so I think you will do well here ..
I , sadly, have not been one of the lucky ones who finds designer anything for $50 lol..
But shoes..ahhh...that is another subject altogether..down the street from me, is a small shoe shop..she has the greatest patent leather rain boots..$30 pesos....I don't need them but was so tempted to be able to say, Oh these? they were $10 dollars..lol

I'll be there week of Oct.8th. Will I see any end of winter sales?

I used to buy all of my clothes up in Canada. Now I have to travel all the way to Argentina to find something affordable! With the US dollar rapidly depreciating against most currencies, I hope I'll be able to afford a pack of gum at Christmas in my own country!

ross despite the rise in C$ vs US$ prices are here are generally higher than US for same item. where you buying all this stuff of the back of a truck

I know how you feel Scarlett. My runners cost me
C$ 145 in Victoria; generally US$80. if I vsit San Francisco and on my last trip south of the border on sale for US$29.83 at the REI Labour Day Sale.

I never miss a chance to mention this to my running mates!!!
