SharonW, just wanted to let you know that I got my Extreme Sport Shoes today, they are very comfortable and plenty wide, lots of room for your toes to wiggle. My daughter and I wore socks with them and walked the mall and that worked too if needed. The shoe laces makes them tighter or loser. If you order a 9 I think you will be good. I hope this helps!

I also bought the Sport Slides (24.50) from Land's End and wore them a lot in Costa Rica when we were there earlier this year....really comfortable, right out of the box....not good for trail hiking, but I wore them just about everywhere else. And if they don't work out, you can return them at a Sear's store.

Yeah, it's a cool thing about the Sears deal. We found out about that a few months ago when our son-in-law in California told us about it. He had exchanged something we had mailed to him from Land's End. Very helpful!

I leave for CR on July 1st. I was disappointed to find out that the Lands End extreme sport shoes are on back-order until July 10th. Looks like I'll be paying for procrastinating- I'm off to REI now.

Sorry to dissent, but I found the Lands End shoes to which you are referring to be a poor option while in Costa Rica as the mesh allowed the little rocks/sand from the beach into the shoes
I also had to cut the heel as they rubbed mercilessly and I couldn't walk very far in them. I kept them for future poolside use, though. Just an opinion; I hope they work for the rest of you better than they did for me. There are lots of amphibious shoes out there, some of which would work well enough in the jungle; I chose some waterproof Teva sneakers that worked pretty well. Enjoy Costa Rica.

I leave for Costa Rica 6/25. I bought a couple of pairs of the Lands End and the Salmons both recommended from this board. I'll let you know how we make out in them. They both fit true to size but I will be using them for rafting and trail walking so we'll see. I'm very excited!

For several of the hikes we took in Monteverde and the Arenal area, I would recommend lightweight, waterproof hiking boots. Certainly not anything open-toed on those walks, unless you want cut feet or broken toes. The boots should have fairly aggressive treads as the paths can be very slick and there was a good deal of up and down, stepping over fallen trees, etc.
There are easy, level strolls as well, but there's no guarantee that those are the walks you'll end up taking.
