Shillmac (or others!): Do you know anything about Atenas?

In the midst of still trying to make plans for our family with young kids (3, 2, and 5 months) and came across some BEAUTIFUL rental homes in Atenas. I just happened upon them as I was looking for a place to stop en route to Samara. But now we're intrigued...they say central location for easy day trips (beach, volcanos, coffee plantations, etc.0, there is wildlife around the house, the town is supposedly charming with some nice restaurants, and again, the homes are beautiful! I'm just wondering if you can tell me anything from all of your experience traveling around...what is the area REALLY like?! Considering basing ourselves there for a week OR splitting time (10 days?) between there and a beach location - either Samara, MA or elsewhere with easy drive access? Early November ideal.

All I know is that it's supposedly one of the most coveted places to live in the world for it's "perfect" climate. Hope you get more help that that! ;-)

I know we passed through there on our drive from Arenal to MA and our driver stopped there for lunch at an Italian restaurant which was very good. It was a beautiful area. Very lush and yes, the homes looked lovely. We did have the conversation that hip mentioned about it having the "perfect" climate - that many Americans are choosing to move there even because the climate was ranked by National Geographic, I believe, as the most perfect climate in the world at one point.

Not sure how accessable it would be for day trips, or what there really is to do right there though!

Dear sclubb,

We have a home in Atenas and it is beautiful there! If you are looking for great climate, and are staying at a home with a pool just to "hang out" it is fantastic! The community is small yet there is a good Super Mercado for groceries, a gas station for fuel and at least 4 good restaurants. However, it is a good hour drive or more each way to any real attractions.
I would suggest MA as a more family oriented area with good wildlife and things do do. JMOP.

Happy last day of July, Shillmac (well, soon it will be July 31st). How many days of vacation (from school) left in Texas? I am awaiting the answer to your question to the time of Mr. Axelrod's speech. DD is traveling at present, lucky girl. T.
