Sheraton in Rio?

My husband and I have Sheraton points & want to use them BUT - We've heard that neither is located in a good area. The 1st is:
Hotel Sheraton Barra - located on Avenida Lucio Costa and the 2nd:
Sheraton Rio Hotel & resort located between the Barra da Tijuca and Ipanema Beach.
If so, can someone recommend a nice place for two nights in February in a central location. Thanks.

The Sheraton in Barra is a newer hotel, very nice about 15 min taxi to Ipanema and 20 min to Copacabana without traffic.

The Rio Sheraton on the other hand is in a great location on the beach with olympic type size pool. It is right outside of Leblon with a 6 min taxi to Ipanema and 10 to Copacabana without traffic. If I had points and this was free I wouldn't let a 6 min taxi ride stop me. Also to walk to Leblon or Ipanema during the day is not unreasonable, I walk all the time from Copacabana to the Rio Sheraton in Leblon, so it's not so bad.

I will mention a 3 star hotel because it is right on the beach in Arpoador on the Ipanema border between Copa and Ipanema, The Arpoador Inn, It is in a great location right on the beach, with this great little restaurant/ Cafe that attracts a good crowd in the afternoon for lunch/drinks just to watch the world go by. And you can walk to anywhere from there, centrally located.

Of course there is always Caesar Park, Everest, Ipanema Inn, Ipanema Plaza all old standards, centrally located in Ipanema.

In Copacabana, the Marriott, Sofitel and many others if you chose Copa.

Dondiega,
Thank you so much for your information.
My husband has a disability so walking too far is a chore. That's why location is so important. The taxi ride is not a problem. As long as the area is safe, I'll probably do the Sheraton but will check out your other suggestions first.

This map might help you get your bearings. The Airport is to the north and the bulk of hotels and amenities are located on the coast to the south.

Yes the map is good, if you click the arrow to go a little to the left west you will see on ave. Neimeyer right in front of Favela Vidigal number 209, that's the Rio Sheraton.

It is on an Avenue that really doesn't have much in that area but day motels that you can't see, so no need to go walk outside the hotel, there is nothing there.

You will take taxis to and from the hotel and the grounds are big like a resort as opposed to most of the hotels in Rio which are like city hotels.
