Sea Turtles Akumal without a tour group?
Is it possible to get to Akumal and arrange a boat ride to see the sea turtles(hopefully)? All the 'tours' offered are soooo long because they include 2 hours hanging out on the beach and lunch, etc. We are hoping to get a cab to Akumal and then just hire a boat for an hour or two...is that even possible?

You don't even need a boat - we did that in June and December 2010 by just standing on the beach, looking out toward where the waves are breaking on the reef, and swimming out in that direction. There are patches of turtle grass in fairly shallow water so swim slowly and scan carefully. We saw dozens our 1st visit and maybe a dozen our 2nd visit, most less than half the distance to the reef. Good luck!

Not sure about the boat, probably through one of the two dive shops there, for sure you can hire a guide there. But the great thing about Akumal is that snorkeling from shore is so easy and mostly a nice sandy entry as well.
You might also want to check out Yal-Ku Lagoon just north of Akumal on the north end of Half Moon Bay, small admission, think about $9-10.

Absolutely NO NEED for a boat for snorkeling at Akumal and seeing turtles! And other great fish! That is the BEAUTY of Akumal, you just put on mask, fin, snorkel (which can all be rented at the dive shop right on the beach) and walk into the water, put your face in the water, and there it all is...best beach snorkeling I have ever experieced!
If you can't find the turtles, look around and see where there are a few people staying in the water w/their faces down. Chances are, they found some turtles. Swim over to them.
