Sea grass in Belize?
 

I am planning a trip to Placencia in Belize at the end if May. I heard a couple mentions of alot of sea grass in the water. Can anyone confirm? Also, I heard mention of horrible sand fleas. Would this be true in South Water Caye too?<BR> Also, any suggestions would be great!<BR>

Yes, in many areas there is seagrass near the shore. It's the great barrier reef along the coast that slows the wave action that over time creates wide sandy beaches with seabottom near shore that supports only limited life. Some beach hotels remove small sections of grass at their beach or at the end of the dock, to make swimming easier and better.<BR><BR>There are some sandflies in Placencia, though generally they are not too bad, and at times some on Southwater. This is a semitropical area and it's rich in life forms of all types.<BR><BR>--Lan Sluder

We found lots of seagreass in Placencia, and none at SWC. The sandflies fluctuated at Placencia, sometimes bad, sometimes not. We found avoiding body contact with the sand helped. Didn't notice any sandfleas at SWC. SWC is a wonderful little island, laid back, good snorkelling, nice people, expensive to get there (hint:bring your own beer). Placencia was a good experience as well, nice people, palm trees, sand, laid back.The Belizeans we met were a friendly bunch.

Hi Rachel<BR><BR>I swam in the ocean off Kitty's place a couple of years ago. Yes there was sea grass. Did it bother me? No. It was not like a lot of kelp that we have in California but it was growing in the sand no big deal. I also got a few sand flea bites. Take some DEET It also help if you take Vit. B12 Hope to return to Placencia some day it was a great trip.
