Scuba diving for kids in Costa Rica?
My kids recently learned to scuba and love it!! They are ages 12 & 9. We were talking about our next vacation to Costa Rica. Does anyone know of a resort that offers scuba to kids at this age?

you might want to look into Drake Bay Wilderness Resort. I would contact them to see what ages they take out.

When I was at La Paloma (Drake Bay)in March a little boy (under 10) got his scuba 'authorization'. They definitely take kids out. And it is a fantastic, friendly place to go. highly recommended.
Note however that CR isn't exactly a scuba diving paradise. |
Diving is so-so in Costa Rica. Please note that the dive gear (rentals) at Drake Bay Wilderness Resort are of very mediocre quality and, in general, the safety levels are not at the standard that I would want for my children.
Having said that, Costa Rica (and in particular the Osa Peninsula) is a great destination for families. The Corcovado Adventures Tent Camp (note, the Adventures Tent Camp, not Tent Camp associated with Costa Rica Expeditions) is a wonderful family location. For children who have just learned to dive, you might want to consider Anthony's Key Resort in Roatan, Honduras. They have a great children's program, scuba equipment specifically sized for children, and lots of experience working with children. |
I went scuba diving in Costa Rica off the coast of Guanacaste and loved it. The visibility isn't as good as the Carribean but it is teeming with life. I used Diving Safaris (used to be known as Bill Beard's Diving Safaris,) and it's a great outfit. But any dive operation worth it's salt will still require that the divers be certified. I'm not certain but I believe that 9 is too young to be certified. If your children are certified by a recognized diver certification association (like NAUI or PADI) then I don't think you'll have a problem. Good luck.
