Scared of the heat!
 

My husband and I hate the heat! We love nature and would like to see wildlife and experience CR. I've read that the Central Plateau and mountains are cool. Is there enough to see and do in CR for two people who want to remain relatively cool? I would appreciate suggestions re where to go.

Depends what these two people are interested in. Savegre Lodge is a nice place in the mountains. Bring your warm undergarments. It was very cold at night in January

I second the suggestion of Savegre Lodge. It's absolutely beautiful there, and you will see many types of birds. However, you won't see many, if any, other types of creatures, so you will want to add at least one other destination to your list. You might wish to skip Tortuguero, as it can be quite steamy.

There is plenty to see and do a mid to high elevations in Costa Rica. The Savegre Lodge area, as noted above is beautiful and harbours some wonderful birds.

One place that I have not visited but would suit you is Bosque de Paz, not too far northwest of San Jose. It is an upper mid elevation habitat with lots of birds and quite a variety of mammals including howler monkeys, paca, agouti and coati.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Poas Volcano and many other locations in or near the central valley would also fit your criteria.

I highly recommend Trogon Lodge. It's lovely there and gets so cold at night that they have heaters in the rooms. Lots to do, gracious staff, beautiful grounds. As someone mentioned it's usually cooler in Vera Blanca where the Peace Lodge is, and Orosi tends to be cooler too. Ranch Rio Perlas is a wonderful place to stay there. You'll have a great time w/o sweating.

Monteverde Cloud Forest is also obviuosly in the mountains and would suit your needs. Lots of hiking and several high adrenaline adventures.

I spent a week in Dec on CR. went to Bosque de Paz, Arenal, and Selva Verde. The first was cold, the second was warm but not hot. the third wasn't even very hot which may have been unusual. So if you stay in the central areas you should be fine. Click on my screen name and find my trip report if you want recommendations on these areas.

I don't like heat and high humidity either. In June 2005 we visited Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, and ARenal. For us, Monteverde was the coolest, with nice pleasantly sunny mornings, some rain afternoons, and cool evenings. Arenal was warmer but very pleasant to hike in the early morning until noon. Manuel Antonio was the only place we felt like it was so hot we actually didn't enjoy the hike at all. We live in San Diego with perfect weather.
