Santiago Hotel Carrera
 

We are travelling to Santiago in December and have noticed many recommendations for Hotel Carrera. We have also come across the site itself but our emails have been bounced. I think I saw somewhere (?) that it may have closed. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes,sadly, they're turning The Carrera into a government building. I had to do quite a big of digging around to find this out as we're going to Santiago in September and after finding out that The Carrera is closed, I've booked a room at the Plaza San Francisco as it seems like a hotel on the same order as The Carrera, older, more in the city center, etc. If anyone has an opinion they'd care to share, I love to hear.. better hotels, area?

I'm not an expert on Santiago hotels. We will be there next year and it appears to us that the Provendencia and Las Condes districts are where the better hotels and shopping areas are located.

Thankyou for your replies. I have heard that Las Condes can be a bit sparse at night and generally out of the way (Lonely Planet) so I wanted Provendencia. I also liked the sound of Plaza San Francisco, so I think I will give that a go. The website for Hotel Carrera is still there but all emails bounce (no wonder if it's closed but it is funny how many dead sites there are out there). Thanks and I will post back eventually how it goes (we will only be there in December)

Last year we stayed at the Plaza San Francisco, and were really disappointed. The room was very noisy, small, dark, the food okay. Service was excellent. This next January we are staying at the Ritz Carlton. I like Los Condes are more, so it should be enjoyable.

The reason I have become against Las Condes is the Lonely Plant Guide description: 'The area's soulless modernity is the pride and joy of the city, which might explain why so many top-end hotels are marooned out here ... there is something .. spooky about its well-groomed sparseness.' is an excerpt. Seems you all don't agree? Perhaps I should re-look here after all - but is there anywhere to go out there?

I am going to Santiago during the beginning of nevember on a tour and have been booked at the Hotel Kennedy. I don't think I would have chosen this hotel or the location on my own, but that's what I got.
IS THERE ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THIS HOTEL OR THE AREA IN WHIC IT IS LOCATED?
Since I think it is not where the main interesting sights are located, and since I have a limited amount of time I want to do my homework and maximize what I will be able to see.

I think los condes is lovely. Clean, beautiful stores, flowers. It all depends on what you are looking for. For me, the lonely planet guide is just one point of view.
