I am looking to go somewhere with my husband and 18 year old daughter over 4th of July. (soon) I don't know much about this town except that everyone who goes there loves it. Can someone tell me where one flies into from Houston, TX? Also, what part of the town do we want to stay in? Do we need to rent a car? Hotel suggestions or B & B's or house recommdations would be really appreciated.

Claro, IAH - BJX is usually the least expensive fight. IAH - QRO is more, but closer. The Trip Advisor forum is very active and lots of info there.
Don't rent a car unless you plan lots of day trips out of town (and have free parking here), as it's a real liability.

SMA is small, very Americanized, and expensive by Mexico standards. We prefer Guanajuato...larger, more to do, more interesting in general, very Spanish. One of the gems of the colonial cities. Another favorite is Morelia (with Patzcuaro nearby), Michoacan. About a 4 hr deluxe bus ride from Mexcio City.

The most recent figures should be published in this Friday's Atencion (www.atencionsanmiguel.org), but earlier this month I saw the folllowing from INM and city authorities:
1.8 Million US expats (25% of the total) live in Mexico. 11,000-12,000 expats (US, Canada, Europe, etc.) live in San Miguel and nearby (of 80,000 in the city and 140,000 total in the region).
Housing is expensive and getting more so as the r/e bubble continues.
I just got a quote of $180. US for a night at Alma del Sol in Guanjuato.
