San Miguel and Environs

Jan. was a cold month and we definitely needed our fireplaces; slept under 3 blankets even though it was fine during the day. VRBO has a great inventory of homes and we chose Casa Lucia, lovely and across from Weber's Tennis Center. Loved the safe, well-lit neighborhood of San Antonio, 15 minutes to El Centro - wonderful Cafe Rama, Provecho, Carne & Vino, Hecho en Mexico and a plain Jane storefront grill for Uraguayan beef. There is another Uruguayan restaurant, La Virundela, which we also like and the Peruvian La Parada is excellent (cash only). Music and crepes suzette at Tio Lucas are served with flair.

San Miguel is wired for American electricity and the water is purified so no food issues. The mercados are great and especially the Sat. AM Organic Rosemont Market, Many weekends have classical music at St. Paul's and a Bibliotecha sponsored House Tour, both worth it.

We found the shops and storekeepers and flavor of San Miguel authentic and the beauty continuous. Some great shoes to shop for. The art scene at Aurora is worth a visit.

Everyone falls in love with S.M. and we know why - charm, beauty, cobblestones and courtyards, plenty to do and see, one place nicer than the last!

Nearby Guanajuato has another good vibe. Thursday nights are lively with all the students out singing and partying. We loved the Alma del Sol, a B & B full of art and so well-located.

Not to be snarky, but I don't recommend drinking tap water in SMA. I'm sure when you said that the water's purified, you meant in the restaurants, not the tap water, but some may be confused.
