San Miguel Allande

We are planning a week's trip to San Miguel. Flying out of California. Is Leon the best place to land? Any tips/experiences that you can share? Hotel recommendations? Do's / Don'ts?
thanks
Nesuda

I haven't been to San Miguele but it's on my list of places I'd like to visit. I found some really good info about it on a website called "Gonomad.com" We live in Texas and from here it definitely looks like the Leon/Guanajuato airport is the way to go. Hope this website helps.

Yes, Leon is the closest airport, you can take a bus or cab to SMA. Before getting in the cab, confirm the price.
So many hotels, tell me what you are looking for. I do recommend staying right in town, so you can walk every where. The two Sierra Nevadas are the top. What month are you planning to go?
I love SMA.

cmarlin20, any suggestions re where to stay and a suggested itinerary will be most appreciated. My husband and I are thinking about taking a 5-day trip to San Miguel SOON! We've never been to any of the places in Mexico, other than to the border states and beach areas (the beaches - many times!) We love Mexico and would love to expand our areas of travel there. :) eb from Texas

Now eb if you go in the summer and drive down you will think you are still in Texas, every other license plate is Texas. My first choice is renting a house, not expensive, I rented a wonderful two bedroom home for a month, $1,200, It is close to town, fully furnished, nice what more can you ask for? Check the website vrbo.com, lots of rentals there, but stay in town. Now I understand 5 days is more suitable for a hotel, tell me your budget, how much per night?

Cmarlin, Thanks for your reply and info, and I'll definitely check out that website. We've decided that we will probably try to go in October and stay for about a week. As far as room cost, I would prefer no more than $100 per night...preferably less. Your idea about renting a place sounds great, but I just wonder if anyone would rent for such a short time?

It has been a few years since I went to San Miguel, but what a beautiful place! I loved it. We flew into Leon and we stayed at a very nice hotel there, but I don't recall the name of it. We also went into another little town near San Miguel, but again, I can't remember the name of it. You'll have a wonderful time there.

If you want to go to Mexico and hang out with Americans, then SMA is the place to go.

We didn't like it, however, as we are trying to learn Spanish and everyone speaks English there; the town is full of junky souvenir shops (since you're a fellow Texans think Galveston); and you won't get the real charm and flavor of of Mexico. We renamed SMA, "Cancun without the beach."

Guanajuato is about an hour away on the bus and is a little better. Zacatecas is an old, colonial, silver-mining town and is wonderful, a little farther away on the bus.

If you can change your trip and go to Oaxaca, you'll really see a beautiful and authentic part of Mexico.

I have very detailed notes on my trip to SMA (which includes the above and Oaxaca) . . . if you're interested, I can email them to you.

Have a great time wherever you decide to go,
Sandy ([email protected])
in Denton

That's the name of the other town! Guanajuato. It was lovely.

This is actually changing the question to anyone staying in Guadelajara? Attending the "teaching school" there.

Thanks.

http://www.internetsanmiguel.com/hotels.html
We are going to San Miguel in August. We will also be visiting Guanajuato. This is one of the sites I like so far for research and hotels.
Also-this months Bon Appetit features both towns and has lists of restaurants and hotels.
We will probably stay at the Casa Sierra Nevada and the Luna in Guanajuato. Have a great time, and please, let us have your trip report when you return?
Thanks,Scarlett
