San Blas or Bocas del toro?

I have travelled to Panama quite a bit - but I've never been to either San Blas or Bocas del Toro - anyone have any suggestions for which is the better travel option. I'll be in Panama in a month and have about 3 days to be at one of these locations.
thanks,

Have sent your note to a friend in Texas who spent quite a bit of time in Panama...I may have her report if you don't hear from her shortly. I do know I would go to the San Blas Islands.. we were there many years ago and although nothing seems the change very few cruise ships stop there even now...it has been the highlight of our cruising years,. In case you do not hear from Sandy please write me at [email protected] I think I have her longth and fun filled report.

San Blas really is a one-day trip by air. So you still could do two days in Bocas.

Hi Petunia,

I'm ParrotMom's friend and I would be happy to send you my notes (email me at the address below).

There are lots of islands in the San Blas chain . . . we went to Wichup Wala and let me tell you . . . there nothing to do there . . . zip, nil, nada. We stayed one night and there was no way we were going to miss the plane to bring us back to Panama City!

I don't know anything about Bocas but it's got to be better than WW!

Buen viaje,
Sandy ([email protected])

Hey there - I totally disagree with the poster below. San Blas is amazing. You have an autonomous indigenous group with a unique culture, idyllic tropical islands, amazing snorkeling opportunities, and many interesting options. Flights to/from San Blas leave only early in the morning, so plan accordingly. I can help you out there.
Bocas is an altogether different feel. It's relaxed, very Caribbean, and has Panama's largest population of ExPats and backpackers. There are several very high end eco lodges that are pretty unique and beautiful, and and it is definitely a fun destination, but nowhere nearly as unique as San Blas.
Also, in the long run, San Blas is easier to get too and less expensive.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I don't check Fodors too often, so it will be an easier way for us to communicate.
Enjoy Panama!
Brian
