safety traveling around Curitiba and Iguassu Falls

I'll be in Brazil in a few wks. and am traveling to Florianopolis then to Iguassu Falls. I have a 6 hr. layover in Curitiba. Do I have time to see the city for a few hrs.? Also, any info on how to make the most of my time at Iguassu Falls (2 full days) would be great. I'll be traveling alone (female in mid 30's)and wonder how safe it is to check out the Argentina side as well. Thanks.

Hello,
I am Brazilian and I live in São Paulo.
Sincerely, in six hours there is almost nothing to do in Curitiba. You can take a quick look around, see some park, take a look in "opera" a theatre made of glass and take a view on the top of the tower.
In Foz do Iguaçu, there is only one great attraction. The Falls. It is really amazing, but it is all.
In the side of Argentina, you can gamble Casino.
If you go to Florianópolis, change your plans and Keep going to South. There is a lot of thinks to see and do.
Send me a message if you need more.

The Argentina side of the falls is perfectly safe. We were there in late January (when the financial problems were pretty bad) and had no problems.

There are plenty of things to do on the Argentinian side of the falls - you can:
- take a helicopter ride (weather permitting)
- walk along the well maintained walkways and view the falls
- take a boat trip under the falls (very wet)
- take a nature trip in a canoe at the top of the falls
- view the museum and art gallery at the visitors centre

Have fun...

Hello ..

my name is Evelyn, I am a frequently Brazil traveller and know the places you have mentioned...Foz, Curitiba and Florianopolis!
What Sergio said about Foz do Iguacu is not really true, because there is a bit more to do in Foz, look at my advices:

Foz do Iguazu:

Of course the most famous sight-seeing in Foz are the Iguazu-falls ...at the
frontier to Argentina and Paraguay...
they are really fantastic and gigantic, ...you should not miss to travel to see them!
I habe been there with my parents since I was a child about 6 times, ...
it was even at the age of 4, 6 or 12 very marvelous there...I would always
come back!

Some links:
http://www.fozdoiguacu.com.br/
http://www.cataratasdoiguacu.com.br

I think you should stay for 2-3 days there at the falls, because if you
would stay only one day, you
do not have enough time to explore the brazilian side of the falls and there
is also the argentine-side of the falls...
you can not see both sides in one day..(or you have to hurry up!!)

I would suggest seeing one day the brazilian side (see the brazilian -side
of the falls first !!!)
and do any other sight-seeing in Foz at the afternoon...,
at the second day you should see the argentine -side (more fantastic at all)
...I think
the price in Argentina is about 5 Dollar /person ....

If you arrive in Foz near to the falls (brazilian side) you will get into a
bus and they will drive you trough
the national-park of Iguazu (in the past you could do it with your car by
yourself) to the falls, where you go by feet
to see different views from Iguazu-falls...I think the price is between 8-10 Real /person!

At almost the half way to the falls the bus will stop, and if you want you
can do the "Macuco Safari" , that is the boat -trip they
offer there ....!The price is 33 US Dollars, really beautiful..here some
links and photos:

http://www.pr.gov.br/celepar/seet/prtur/cidades/foz/fozpasi1.html
http://www.macucosafari.com.br

There near of Foz is also "Hidreletrica de Itaipu", the biggest of the world
...very interesting (I think that the entrance is still free)!
http://www.itaipu.gov.br/

Very beautiful also : a visit at PARQUE DAS AVES FOZ TROPICANA , exotical bird-park...the price is 12 Real !
http://www.parquedasaves.com.br/

You should think on, if you want to do a helicopter-flight , it is really
not very cheap, but I can imagine how fantastic it
should be to see the falls from above:

* The flight above the falls and national-park (10 minutes) costs U$ 60.00
* The flight above falls, national-park, Itaipu, and 3-country-frontier (35
minutes) costs U$ 120,00 for 4 persons

To stay in Foz do Iguazu the best possibility to stay in a hotel in my
opinion is the youth -hostel there:
for one person 15-20 Real, in room called "cabana" (double-bed, bathroom,
frigobar, air-conditioned, breakfast included...)
for 20 Real /person !
The youth-hostel "Paudimar" in Foz is situated near the falls, a little
inside to the avenue to the falls (Av.das Cataratas).
There you can also book tours to the sight-seeings of Foz (especially to the
argentine-side will help you a lot!) , so you do not need to go alone or
have to rent a car!
The people in youth -hostel are friendly, do also speak some english (not
common in brazilian youth-hostels)
and you can also - if you do not find better restaurants or are a bit too
tired to go out at night-
eat there at night (with reservation) , costs about 5 Real /person (very
cheap, you will not find any restaurant there in Foz
to eat out cheaper) .
If you want, you can also buy the things you would like in a supermarket
(centre of the city)
and cook by yourself there, they have a special kitchen for travellers there!

Here is the adress from the youth -hostel : (there is another one in the
centre of Foz, but not as good as this one)

Albergue da Juventude Paudimar
Rodovia das Cataratas , km 11
Remanso Grande
Foz do Iguacu-Parana
Brasil
Tel+Fax: (045) 529-6061
E Mail: [email protected]<BR...audimar.com.br

I would suggest you to reserve in advance at the youth-hostel, because in
Foz there are allways a lot of tourists, and so it is
possible that the youth -hostel sometimes is full...!
I you would like, I could send to you a map of Foz do Iguacu, but in this case I need your E Mail-adress , so please write me to : [email protected]
if you want a tourist map in advance!!

...continue in next answer...

Curitiba

Curitiba sure is one of the prettiest cities in Brazil, all is very
organized and clean....!

If you'll arrive in Curitiba by plane and have a six hours lay-over I think it will be difficult to see something from the city, because the Airport is far of the centre, ..about 17kms far..
but of course there is an airport-bus from there to the centre of the city, which you could take:

For your orientation in Curitiba you can find a tourist-map of Curitiba on following page:
http://www.webhotel.com.br/parana/mapas/mp_ctbaturistico.htm

On this map you can also see the main attractions of Curitiba, so you will see which you can reach by food and which are too far away.
Oh, and in Curitiba there is also a tourist-bus called "Jardineira" who's going to all of the attractions.
In the centre you will sure see one of the stations!

Well, I hope that this could help you a little bit, if you still need any information about Florianopolis, Foz or any other place, please feel free to E Mail me, okay??

Greetings
Evelyn

We were at the Falls in January. I would recommend you go to both the Brazilian and the Argentine sides. however you need more time on the Argentine side (full day as a minimum) as there are a lot more walks that you can do. Excellent experience. Not sure how u are travelling, we used the bus and found it excellent.

Hi! I live in Curitiba and my family is from Florianopolis. All I have to say to you is that both cities are wonderful. Of course, Curitiba is great to live in, and Floripa (nickname for Florianopolis) is the best for vacation. Please, take your time and visit all the beaches in the isle! They are really amazing with great nature around... If you haven't gone yet and want some tips, please don't hesitate to e-mail me... PS. Take Evelyn's tips for Foz do Iguacu. They are correct!!
