Safety in the Peten
I am thinking of attending n english school inSan Andres, Peten, Guatemala. It is called Eco-escuela De Espanol. It's location is on Lake Peten-Itza in the Peten region. Has anybody been attended this school or stayed in this area. Is this a safe area or should I attend somewhere else. The wife and I have done a fair amount of Mexico and have been to Belize and Costa Rica. We have always managed to stay out harms way and have had great experiences. All responses are greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping you mean Spanish school. :) I have not attended the school but hope to some day - please let us know how it goes if you decide to stay. With normal precautions it seems like a very safe area to me. Happy trails!

Sorry I do mean spanish school.
Thanks |
Although I'm a novice on this topic, my sister-in-law is from the town of San Andres. She and her husband met as they were helping to build the school that you're referring to. They now live in the states.
From them, I've been told that you will be safe & happy in San Andres....I'm guessing that is as unbiased as they can be. My husband and I will be traveling to San Andres/Flores/Tikal at the end of this month - along with two of my brother-in-laws, their wives and three kids under age 7. Most of the group has been there before. Hope this is of some help to you.... |
We were just in El Remate and Flores and didn't feel at all at risk. We used the usual precautions that we use anywhere when traveling. We were pleasantly surprised at how comfortable we were while traveling to many parts of Guatemala. We always asked locally where we should be careful and the answers seemed pretty honest.
